Since 2003 ENC has seen an overall increase in the number of new business starts. From 2003-2005 the number of new business starts rose dramatically, by 283%. Since that time, the number of new business starts in the region has dropped by 64%, however, it has remained stable the past 2 years. The decline in firms over 500 resulted in an increase of firms employing 100-499 due to layoffs from the recession.
